New requirements for continuing education for real estate brokers

The New York State Real Estate BrokersĀ Click Here Amendment has changed the continuing education requirements for real estate brokers. This new law requires all licensees to complete 22.5 hours of approved continuing education each year. These courses should include 2.5 hours on ethical business practices and 1 hour on recent legal issues impacting the practice of real estate brokers in New York. The requirements will be effective July 1, 2021. This change will apply to all licensees, including those who were exempt from CE requirements before.

To qualify for the new requirements, a salesperson must successfully complete a broker qualifying course and pass a final examination. The course must cover two hours of cultural competency, 2.5 hours of implicit bias, and one hour on recent legal matters. In addition, the amendment removed the 15-year exemption for real estate brokers. Beginning July 1, 2021, all brokers must take continuing education courses. This will take some time for some brokers, but is still the best option.

Online courses required for renewal of a real estate license

New York State requires all salespersons to take online courses for license renewal. Each course has a specified number of hours and is timed to allow for completion within six months of enrollment.
